How to Read LED String Light Test Reports Before Ordering

Before accepting LED string light test reports, check what was tested and whether it matches the product being quoted. Start with the product identification, electrical ratings, construction details and sample photographs. Then review the results and any exclusions. A “Pass” on the cover does not, by itself, establish coverage for every version in the supplier’s range.
For a purchasing team, the useful outcome is a clear link between the documents, the approved sample and the order specification.
What Should You Check First?
- Request the complete report, including its photographs and referenced attachments.
- Identify the tested sample and any additional versions explicitly listed.
- Check the electrical ratings, components, operating modes and test conditions.
- Record unresolved differences before approving production.
What Do the Different Report Types Cover?
Lighting files often contain several documents with different purposes. The following categories help organise a review; they are not a universal list of everything required for every destination.
| Document category | What to look for | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical safety | The identified construction and safety tests under the standards listed, such as EN 60598-1 and EN 60598-2-20. | A guarantee against every electrical failure or coverage of unlisted configurations. |
| EMC | Applicable emissions and immunity results, operating modes and assessment criteria. | Zero interference in every installation. |
| RoHS | The evaluated materials, restricted substances, methods and reported results. | Weather resistance or automatic coverage of replacement materials. |
| FCC emissions | The applicable U.S. rule parts, equipment classification and measured emissions. | Electrical-safety approval or automatic coverage of Canadian requirements. |
| Ingress protection | The stated IP rating, sample assembly and dust or water test conditions. | Service life, wind resistance, UV resistance or an operating temperature range. |
For Canadian orders, identify the applicable ISED requirements separately. ISED’s ICES-005 lighting equipment standard sets out its scope, exclusions and emissions requirements. A document citing FCC rules alone should not be described as proof of Canadian compliance.
Can You Identify the Product From the File?
Compare the report number, issue date, applicant, manufacturer and product identification across the cover, result pages and attachments. Where a certificate refers to a report, check that the reference matches.
A supplier’s commercial product name may differ from the sample code. Ask for a written mapping that identifies the ordered configuration and explains its relationship to the tested construction. A matching name is helpful, but the construction still needs to match.
If several series are listed, check where they appear and whether the report explains their differences. A series name on a certificate and a single sample code in the report should be recorded accurately rather than treated as interchangeable information.
Which Details Should Match the Quotation?
Use the approved specification as a reference. Compare the rated voltage, AC or DC supply where relevant, frequency, power information, cable, connectors and supplied accessories with the report and sample photographs.
Look closely at the lead, end closures, joints and any controller or supply device. If the quoted product uses a different component, ask how that difference has been assessed. A report for a separate power supply is not automatically a report for the complete light string.
Keep the order dimensions clear as well. Our bulk LED string light specification checklist explains how to record illuminated length, lead length, LED quantity and connections without relying on a photograph alone.
How Do You Read Results Beyond the Word “Pass”?
Start with the test conditions beside the result. Note the supply used, operating mode, sample arrangement and any accessories connected during testing. A value measured in one arrangement should not be presented as a specification for every version.
Read the table headings and units before comparing numbers. Check whether a value is a limit, a measurement, a rated value or a calculation. A procedure describing a possible test level is not the same as a completed result at that level.
Where both a result and a limit are given, check the stated acceptance criterion and notes. Blank cells, slashes and “N/A” entries need to be understood in context. They should not be rewritten as measured passes.
What Matters in an IP65 Report?
Check the assembly submitted for testing: light string, joints, mating connectors, seals and closed ends, as identified in the file. Photographs should help explain how it was prepared and positioned.
For water testing, distinguish nozzle diameter from flow rate. Review the recorded distance, duration and operating or installation conditions, then read the inspection outcome. For dust testing, review the applicable procedure and recorded conditions rather than relying only on the rating on the cover.
IP65 does not cover immersion. It also does not establish how the installation will perform under wind loads, prolonged sunlight or freezing temperatures. See our IP65 outdoor installation guide for the practical questions to raise before ordering.
Are a Report, a Certificate and a Declaration the Same?
No. A test report records the assessment performed on the identified sample and may include measurements, conditions, observations and photographs. A certificate may summarise an assessment and refer to another file; read its scope and any conditions printed on it.
An EU declaration of conformity is a separate manufacturer responsibility. The European Commission’s CE marking guidance distinguishes conformity assessment, technical documentation and the declaration. Receiving a test certificate does not replace that process.
What Should Be Clarified Before Production?
| Finding | Useful follow-up |
|---|---|
| A sample photo differs from the quotation. | Identify the changed component and obtain a documented explanation of coverage. |
| An attachment or result page is missing. | Request the complete file and confirm the page sequence. |
| Ratings or sample codes differ between pages. | Ask which entry is correct and request a corrected or explanatory record. |
| The report uses an earlier standard edition. | Confirm its relevance to the destination and intended placing-on-market date. |
| A result is being used as a sales specification. | Confirm whether it is measured, rated or calculated, and retain the relevant conditions. |
These findings are reasons to ask questions. Formatting differences or an old issue date alone do not establish that a document is false or unusable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the same manufacturing process cover every custom length?
Consistent production methods are relevant, but do not settle document coverage on their own. Check the stated range and whether changes affect electrical loading, connections, sealing or other assessed construction details.
Can one report include different voltages?
It may include more than one version if the file explicitly identifies and assesses them. Check the listed ratings, representative samples and results rather than assuming either blanket coverage or a separate-file requirement for every version.
Does an older report automatically need replacing?
Not solely because of its age. Review product changes, the applicable standards and destination requirements, and obtain an updated assessment where needed.
Request Documents for the Configuration You Need
Send OSLENA the product reference, voltage, destination market and any planned construction changes. Ask us to identify the relevant available files and any points that need confirmation for the quoted version.
Request a technical document review alongside your quotation so the product specification and supporting records can be checked together.
